MIBBI workshop report now available

As you may be aware the latest MIBBI workshop was held at the start of this month. The report from this meeting is now available in the journal Standards in Genomic Sciences. Along with reports from a number of other relevant meetings (TOC here). There will be further discussion of the detailed outcomes from the meeting over the next few weeks with further announcements to follow.Thanks once again to everyone who attended the meeting (or tried to) despite the unseasonally harsh weather, with special thanks to the Beilstein-Institut for their sponsorship of the event.

Great RIN/NESTA report on data sharing

The research Information Network (RIN) and the National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts (NESTA) have just put out a really interesting report on the reasons for and problems with data sharing, based on six case studies (direct link to PDF). Lots of the issues are things that come up time and again, though it's nice to see the case made less anecdotally than I normally manage :)

MIEME: Minimal Information for ElectroMagnetic Experiments

We are pleased to announce the registration of the MIEME guidelines for neuroscience electromagnetic experiments by the NEMO project and their collaborators from NIF, HeadIT, EEGLAB, BIRN and BrainMap. The developers have expressed their intent to work with the MIBBI-registered MINI project, extending that work to encompass EEG, MEG and ERP techniques.

The first version of MICheckout is up, linked from the MIBBI front page, allowing the compilation of MIBBI Foundry modules into made-to-measure sets of guidelines. Now stuffing with MIBBI Foundry content (lots to go, but enough in there already to warrant the announcement). Big thanks to Eamonn Maguire for the GUI and for plumbing everything in.

First 'good' rendering of a Foundry module compilation (pseudo-MIGS)

It's not going to win any awards for aesthetics, but this is the first decent rendering of the combined set of MIBBI modules that are more or less equivalent to MIGS/MIMS/MIENS (the full thing, not one of the six subsets as viewable in the old version of MIGS -- this is just a demo after all). Quick TSV version next then on to the ISAcreator config file for MDA data entry tool goodness.

MIATA: MI About T Cell Assays

We are pleased to announce the registration of the MIATA guidelines for the description of T cell assays. The main initiators of this effort are the Cancer Vaccine Consortium (CVC/CRI), the Cancer Immunotherapy Consortium (CIMT), and the Immune Monitoring Center at Stanford University. The final guidelines are envisioned to be an immune monitoring field-wide accomplishment.

Journal 'OMICS' recommends MIBBI

The Liebert journal 'OMICS: A journal of Integrative Biology' now endorses MIBBI. "OMICS also recommends that all publications in 2010 follow relevant community-wide standards and, specifically, will be MIBBI-compliant (Minimum Information for Biological and Biomedical Investigations, www.mibbi.org)" wrote Editor in Chief Eugene Kolker in his December 15 editorial.

MIIDI development meeting

The MIIDI (Minimum Information about an Infectious Disease Investigation -- wiki @ http://is.gd/2DW16) development meeting is next week in Oxford. Several issues likely to arise concerning scope, style and depth. There is a commitment to develop MIIDI in the context of MIBBI (i.e., in collaboration with other MIBBI-registered projects and their participants, and in a manner that enables reuse within the Foundry).

RCUK publishes report on open access study

From the announcement web page: "RCUK published today an independent study commissioned by the Research Councils into open access to research outputs. The purpose of the study was to identify the effects and impacts of open access on publishing models and institutional repositories in light of national and international trends. This included the impact of open access on the quality and efficiency of scholarly outputs, specifically journal articles. The report presents options for the Research Councils to consider, such as maintaining the current variation in Research Councils’ mandates, or moving towards increased open access, eventually leading to Gold Standard.

Research in the open: how mandates work in practice

Friday 29 May 2009, Royal Institute of British Architects

The Repositories Support Project (RSP) and the Research Information Network (RIN) are holding this free event to look at how researchers are responding to mandates to include the results of their research work in repositories. It will cover the issues around both research funders' and institutional mandates (at institutional, subject-based and national levels), and ask how well these mandates are working in practice.

The meeting will be an opportunity to debate about how to make research outputs accessible and open, where appropriate, and how to engage researchers better in this process.

MIBBI accepted for ISMB 'Highlights' presentation

We're happy to announce that The MIBBI paper (available free from Nature Biotechnology) has been selected for presentation in the 'Highlights' track at this year's ISMB/ECCB in Stockholm, Sweden. We've yet to learn exactly when the talk will be; all we've had to date is the confirmation of acceptance -- we'll update this information when we know more.

N.B. Many MIBBI folk will also attend the M³ Special Interest Group meeting -- an excellent opportunity to meet and chat about any and all issues relating to reporting guidelines and 'Good Reporting Practice'.

MIBBI Blog Launched

MIBBI stands for "Minimum Information about a Biological or Biomedical Investigation". The MIBBI Consortium is made up of communities working at the grass-roots level to create 'minimum information' checklists for describing data in the biological domain.

This blog has been launched to complement the primary MIBBI website and will be used to post news items - for example the submission of new checklists to the portal.

Goals of the MIBBI Project

To increase the visibility of projects developing guidance for the reporting of aspects of biological and biomedical science.
To encourage collaborative development between such projects, where appropriate, to avoid duplication of effort or competition.
To promote the adoption of consensus guidance on reporting by journals and funders
